Monsoon Devastation Continues to Isolate Ministry

A ministry in West Bengal that Christian Aid has been assisting since 1956 is still suffering from nature’s fury after this year’s monsoon season caused the worst damage and destruction in decades. Roads were destroyed, houses washed away, hospitals evacuated, and lives have been lost.

Kalimpong is a sub-division of the District of Darjeeling, West Bengal, where indigenous missionaries started a children’s Home in 1968 after a similar disaster where floods destroyed homes and left many children orphaned and homeless. Because of this most recent monsoon, several deaths have been confirmed with many others reported missing and believed dead. Re-opening of the roads has been hindered by loose boulders which are balanced precariously above the landslide zone. More rain and subsequent mud-slips would cause even further damage and danger to relief workers.

The situation is critical.

With supply lines cut, Kalimpong has been unable to receive normal commodities. What little food was salvaged locally is nearly impossible to obtain since the price has tripled. Patients from the TB ward of the hospital had to be evacuated and moved to an already over-crowded government medical facility. Families living in the dangerous areas have also been evacuated. Those who refuse to leave cannot sleep due to the fear of being washed away. Children have not been able to attend school as they have all been shut down. Even walking is a treacherous form of transportation as weak and crumbling walls along the roadsides may come crashing down on you.

Immediate relief is needed to provide food, clothing, blankets and shelter to evacuees. Christian Aid has been giving on-going support which is being used to restore homes, re-open schools, and generally reach out to those in dire need. Often it is circumstances like this where the Christian witness can be the most effective. Please pray for this ministry’s efforts in giving comfort to those in need and please consider giving your help as they continue to struggle for survival in the aftermath of disaster.
